Today the Yankees filled their hole in left field with veteran outfielder, Randy Winn. The switch-hitting outfielder will platoon in left field with lefty Brett Gardner and be able to spell new center fielder Curtis Granderson and right fielder Nick Swisher. This all but spells the end for Johnny Damon's reign as a Yankee. Winn's contract is for one year and around the $2 mil that GM Brian Cashman has continually said he has left to spend.
I am not too sure how I feel about this signing. Winn hit only .158 from the right side last year and he is 35 years old, but his corner outfield defense still rates well. If Kevin Long can fix Winn's swing from the right side like he helped Melky Cabrera last season, this could be a good short term move for the Yanks, but if he can't, it could prove to be disastrous and could leave the Yankees thin in the outfield. I would have preferred Rocco Baldelli, Reed Johnson, or Mark DeRosa, but I guess that's why I am not the GM. We'll see what happens.
