The league's worst team during the regular season was awarded the No. 1 overall pick in Tuesday's NHL draft lottery.
Boston, Florida, Columbus and the Islanders rounded out the top 5 picks.
The Islanders, who drafted John Tavares first overall in 2009, earn the fifth pick after a season which saw them improve an NHL-best 18 points, 79 points this season as opposed to 61 last season.
The Islanders are in dire need of scoring help, as well as help along the blue line. A big, physical defenseman with some offensive ability would be exactly what this team needs. If the Islanders can get lucky, they might be able to draft defensive standout Cam Fowler of the Windsor Spitfires.
The scouting report on Fowler reads:
One-Timer: While Brandon Gormley and Erik Gudbranson may have narrowed the gap, Fowler is still the clear cut number one blueliner for the 2010 draft class. Drawing comparisons to the likes of Drew Doughty, Niedermayer and Rob Blake, if he can continue to develop his physical play, Fowler has the potential to be a franchise defenseman.
He is an elite skating, savvy puck carrying, two-way blueliner. Should he tap into all his potential, and his work ethic and attitude suggest he will, Fowler could very well be a top 10 point-producing blueliner in the big leagues in the not so distant future.
Like I said, the Isles will have to get lucky, and maybe they will, but regardless, they will have a solid player to take with the fifth pick.
