Jets Longtime Long Snapper James Dearth Doesn't Expect to Return

James Dearth, the Jets’ long snapper for the last nine years, doesn’t expect to be there this season. He is a free agent, but the team hasn’t called him and he is not taking part in the voluntary offseason program despite the fact that he and his family are currently in New Jersey.

“I’m just waiting for a call basically for somebody to pick me up,” Dearth said.

The Jets signed LS Tanner Purdum on Feb. 12. Purdum was a rookie free agent with Kansas City last season, and before that played for NAIA Baker graduating in 2007.

Dearth said he is prepared to wait until the start of the season for other opportunities. If he were signed by another team this offseason, the Jets would be able to use his vacated spot to pursue another free agent, such as QB Mark Brunell. The Jets can only pursue a free agent for one of their own signed by another team.

Does Dearth expect the Jets to resign him?

“I have no idea what’s going to happen,” Dearth said. “Right now it doesn’t look like it.”

He doesn't do anything but long snap, but he is very good at what he does and has been very good at what he does, so I don't see why the Jets just do not bring him back. The salary that he makes most likely would not be enough to sign Mark Brunell to back-up Mark Sanchez.
